Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra review: A smartphone like no other

Samsung Galaxy S22: The return of the Galaxy Note

Since 2020, Samsung has not released a new Galaxy Note. The demise of this popular group, known for its pen (and bangs), has left many of the brand's fans orphans.

With the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung is trying to reconcile them. This new smartphone, even if it belongs to the Galaxy S family, takes on the aesthetic codes of the Galaxy Note. Ultra rectangular in shape, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has flat edges on the top and bottom, but is perfectly curved on the sides. Anyone with a Galaxy Note should immediately notice these similarities. This design offers a very good grip, thanks to the curves that perfectly adapt to the palm of the hand. The only thing to keep in mind: the S22 Ultra is a big kid. 228 grams and 6.8 inches is not for everyone. Try it in store before .  buying if you have any doubts.

On the back, the Galaxy S22 Ultra doesn't look like any other phone. In a market where everything looks the same, with rectangular blocks not always attractive, Samsung is making an effort to try and crack the codes. The S22 Ultra's four camera modules, as well as its laser sensor, aren't located in a single block. Each has its own circuit and protrudes slightly from the back of the device, giving the impression that it is completely integrated into the chassis. Is it convincing? It all depends on the taste. For our part, we find it pretty cool (especially since the matte finish of the back highlights the cameras). We know that others won't share our opinions.

Samsung has long mocked its inability to pay attention to detail, and with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it proved to us that it's not the #1 smartphone for nothing. In hand, the smartphone makes a real impression of prestige. Its ending is impeccable. We note in passing the perfect alignment of its ports. Symmetry is perfect, while Samsung has long struggled with this aspect. Nothing to add, the S22 Ultra is a great device.

S-Pen, a real bonus

The similarities with the Galaxy Note don't stop at the design. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is already reviving the S-Pen, which we thought was doomed to disappear. Marketed last year as an optional accessory (we lost it all the time, because there was nowhere to store it), the Samsung Pencil is back in its original form. It is stored next to the smartphone's USB Type-C port and is part of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It is not a supplement to purchase.

If you are not familiar with the Galaxy Note, you may be wondering “What is a stylus in a smartphone? There are many answers to this question. Indeed, it allows writing and taking notes. The Samsung Notes app, with varying degrees of success, converts what you type into text and allows you to search In handwritten notes. It's really practical. The S-Pen can also be used to move around the screen (if your fingers are dirty for example), to draw or paint. If you find this last option silly, know that Samsung's PENUP software is really cool. No There's nothing more relaxing than coloring with the S-Pen on this smartphone.

With a response time of 2.8ms, the Samsung S-Pen is the most impressive stylus on the market. It's like writing on a notebook, digital ink appears in real time. The only flaw is that the Galaxy S22 Ultra's curved edges spoil the experience. When you pass it, the writing sometimes stops. So it is highly recommended to mainly use the middle of the screen. It's a shame, magic is less powerful.

Other uses of the S-Pen, this time more dispensable, the pen can be used as a Bluetooth remote control. It's very practical for selfies (you can take a picture by pressing its button), and a little less for everything about gesture control (you can increase the volume, pause multimedia content, go back to the home screen or take a photo by moving the stylus while holding down on his button). However, it must be admitted that Samsung is the only manufacturer that offers a smartphone capable of doing many things. This reinforces our impression that the Galaxy S22 Ultra is not a "regular" smartphone. This product is a compendium of all that is best... and what no one else has to offer. This is a real advantage in such a competitive market.

The brightest screen in a smartphone

As Samsung Display is the supplier for all high-end smartphones (Apple, Oppo, etc.), it is not surprising that we are tempted by the Galaxy S22 Ultra display. Like every year, Samsung presents with its new flagship phone the most efficient OLED panel, which no other manufacturer has yet (presumably Oppo in March, and Apple in September).

So it's no surprise that the Galaxy S22 Ultra's gigantic screen (6.8 inches) is excellent. Samsung launches with this smartphone the second generation of its LTPO panels, capable of a refresh rate of 1-120Hz (when the screen displays an image, it refreshes slightly to conserve its battery. When you are gaming or browsing the web, it can go up to 120fps, which increases of its liquidity).

Brightness level too, we are breaking all records. Samsung promises 1750 cd/m2 in the best conditions, we have just over 1200 cd/m2 in real life. This is a record for a smartphone, which makes the S22 Ultra usable everywhere. To activate the maximum brightness, you should go to the settings and check the "Additional brightness" option. The battery runs faster, but on the beach in the summer the S22 Ultra will not be a victim of reflections.

Only drawback, always the same thing you would say: the curved screen. It's beautiful, but not really practical. We would have preferred Samsung to do without it.

The perfect spec sheet?

As we told you in the introduction to this test, the Galaxy S22 Ultra also serves as a display for Samsung, which brings a whole host of technologies with this mobile phone. For example, it is the world's first mobile phone with the new Corning Glass, Gorilla Glass Victus +. This makes it, on paper, more flexible than its competitors. On the back, its lenses are also covered with a new glass, possibly Gorilla Glass DX, which limits reflections when taking photos. Finally, it's one of the world's first mobile phones compatible with Wi-Fi 6E, the future network standard that will soon use the 6GHz band.

On top of all that, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has everything you could possibly wish for in a high-end smartphone. 5G compatibility, giant 5,000mAh battery (we'll be back to autonomy in a few moments), 45W fast charging (but slower than mobile phones from Oppo and Xiaomi), 15W wireless charging, UWB chip for GPS tracking like SmartTag. Galaxy S22 Ultra is a geek's dream. It ticks all the boxes.

Well-designed software...but weird bugs

For a long time, the experience of the software offered by Samsung smartphones was horrible. The TouchWiz overlay has been a nightmare for millions of users. In recent years, Samsung has gone from the weak link to the top of the category, thanks to One UI, one of the best Android overlays.

One UI perfectly adapts to large screens, it is super streamlined and provides, Samsung requires, a lot of functionality for its users. Since Samsung has learned from its mistakes, most of these features are optional. One UI is truly designed for everyone and isn't an obstacle to buying a Samsung terminal in 2022.

There are quite a few bugs on the S22 Ultra. Strange lines appearing in the middle of the screen, 4G and 5G loss, sluggishness ... We tend to imagine that everything will be quickly improved by software updates (Samsung is used to youthful bugs on all its models, and soon they are corrected). However, it seemed dishonest to us not to point them at you in our test.
